👋 Intro
When hiring a QA engineer, the client has a certain need to fulfill. Some employees in companies do not see what needs a person performing this role can meet. It is very important to make these people aware and tell them about our role. Be it in the form of training, presentation or just a simple conversation. I will share here my ideas on how to do it.
👊 After-effects
Let’s assume that people working in the sales department have no idea who a QA engineer is - the consequence of this may be the lack of projects for the person performing this role. It will be rather hard to show the client the superlatives of working with a QA engineer without knowing what the person in this position does, right?
I assume that the development team is aware of the value QA Engineer brings to the project, but I am also aware that there are exceptions to this rule. In this situation, I do not see a major problem - such a person, working with a professional, will find out how much the QA Engineer was missing in his project.
Now imagine another situation: when the PM doesn’t know what a QA Engineer does. You are trying to estimate some work, e.g. writing automated tests for a specific functionality. When asked why it will take so long - you explain how you write tests, what you need to analyze and what problems you may encounter. Each task will require you to explain from scratch what your work looks like, what tools you need to use. Of course, apart from spending a lot of your time, there are no unpleasant consequences in this situation, but if such an unaware PM works with a person who wants to take advantage of her blindness and just push her bullshit - it wouldn’t be difficult at all.
💪 Actions
When working with all people who have first encountered the role of QA in the company, you must demonstrate full professionalism. These benefits resulting from working together will be visible immediately.
Sometimes it is also a good idea to organize a presentation about this role in the company, which will be available to all members of the company, regardless of what department they work in. How to prepare such a presentation is presented below…
✌️ How did I do it?
My experience shows that clients who want to hire a QA engineer already have a certain problem or need to be implemented.
In my career, I have already encountered a lot of such problems and needs, so I wrote them down in the form of a list and added a short description to each point.
Each of these problems can be solved by taking some specific action.
Then, once that action is taken, we can see some of the benefits of taking that action.
For example, I described the problem of unsatisfactory results from automatic tests:
👉 Why is it worth it?
I believe that it is always worth spreading information about the importance of excellent software quality in the process of building solid products, about how we, as specialists, care for and ensure this quality. A conscious team in our company will only help us achieve this goall, which is high quality.
